i spent seven weeks this summer unemployed. at first when i got laid off i did not try to relax too much. lol, relaxation is the furthest thing from my mind when faced with sudden scarcity. instead, i tried to fill each of my days with tons of meetings, calls, speaking with anyone who wanted to speak with me, trying not to give myself too much time to feel sorry for myself or even process what happened, and after a couple weeks chase was like “please stop doing this, you’re stressing yourself out, you’re not even taking meetings for projects you’re interested in,” plus by then i had a feeling i had already met the company i would probably accept an offer from eventually (spoiler alert: i was right), so i listened to him, and i did stop. and i did relax. i got a facial, i went to the beach, i threw a birthday party for myself and a friend, i had dinner at hart’s, we went to beacon, we went to syracuse for the state fair and so i could see my favorite professor from my department in the journalism school, we went back to the beach.

and then i started work this week! as privileged and luxurious-feeling as it was to be able to have so much time off, i was badly craving structure and routine and a paycheck and some modicum of stability. so, i have a new job: i’m the director of content for company ventures, an early-stage venture firm in new york city. you could just go to the website if you wanted to read more about it, but what really drew me to it was, as cliched as it sounds, the people there. everyone there does work that’s drastically…
